All around the world, expectant parents are faced with many decisions when it comes to the birth of their unborn baby.
The interest parents take in researching these decisions has exploded in the last few years with alternative medicinal practices like midwives, home births and natural births on the rise.
Many new parents attribute the outcome of their choices to the research they do online.

The United States in particular is faced with a new issue taking hold of the internet, one only parents expecting a baby boy must consider, and that issue is routine infant circumcision.
Routine infant circumcision has been a normalcy within the United States since the 1950’s, following the end of World War II.
Most parents expecting baby boys in the United States do not think twice about the issue of circumcision, especially when most generations of men in their family are circumcised as well.

However, there is a rapidly growing number of  parents, men, and organizations on the internet and on the streets challenging expectant parents to reconsider routine infant circumcision and bring their baby boys home intact.

The foreskin of a newborn male is very narrow to prevent the entrance of foreign substances in infancy, such as faecal matter.

It is attached to the foreskin and the membrane attaching it must be torn so that the foreskin can be pulled away from the head of the penis.

The doctor then crushes the foreskin with clamps to sever blood vessels and prevent excessive bleeding.

The foreskin is then held with forceps and a slit is made down the side of the foreskin.
A device called a Plastibell or a Gomco clamp is then inserted in between the foreskin and the head of the penis, and the foreskin is pulled over each device.

The doctor performing the circumcision will then estimate how much foreskin needs to be removed and either clamp down or tie string around the foreskin to cut off blood supply and allow for clotting.
Then, foreskin above the clamp or string is cut away.
Circumcision is always based on the estimation of the doctor as to how much should be removed, which could explain why routine infant circumcision results in so many complications.

Female genital mutilation (FGM); male circumcision (MGM):
time to confront the double standard.

I support this campaign and I believe that FGM is impermissible.

Indeed, I think that all children, whether female, intersex, or male, should be protected from having parts of their genitals removed unless there is a pressing medical indication; I think this is so regardless of the cultural or religious affiliations of the child’s parents.

ALEXITHYMIA AND CIRCUMCISION.

Alexithymia and Circumcision Trauma:
A Preliminary Investigation.

This preliminary study investigates what role early trauma might have in alexithymia acquisition for adults by controlling for male circumcision.

Three hundred self-selected men were administered the Toronto Twenty-Item Alexithymia Scale checklist and a personal history questionnaire.

The circumcised men had age-adjusted alexithymia scores 19.9 percent higher than the intact men:-
were 1.57 times more likely to have high alexithymia scores;
were 2.30 times less likely to have low alexithymia scores;
had higher prevalence of two of the three alexithymia factors (difficulty identifying feelings and difficulty describing feelings);
and were 4.53 times more likely to use an erectile dysfunction drug.

Alexithymia in this population of adult men is statistically significant for having experienced circumcision trauma and for erectile dysfunction drug use.
People suffering from the personality trait disorder alexithymia have difficulty identifying and expressing their feelings.

They daydream less, and confuse emotions with body sensations, such as physical pain.

They tend to lack imagination and intuition. This translates into not being able to imagine what others are feeling, leading to an inability to respond to others' needs.

People with severe alexithymia are so removed from their feelings that they view themselves as being robots or automatons.

If acquired at an early age, this might limit access to language and interfere with the socialization process that begins early in life.

Moderate to high alexithymia can interfere with personal relationships and hinder therapy.

Men should have the right to choose circumcision, not have the choice forced upon them.

Infant circumcision without consent or immediate medical justification is an unjustified violation of basic human rights, that shares more in common with ancient coming-of-age rituals than responsible medical practice.

There are still many people who like to pretend that infant circumcision and genital mutilation are not the same thing.
