CIRCUMCISION, THE UNKINDEST CUT.

 

When I researched this column on circumcision, my initial reaction was "wow." I thought the topic would be as easy to write about as rolling off a log, but it took hours. I hadn't realized the male foreskin had triggered so many medical articles and so much controversy. Now I'm convinced that most families make a decision on circumcision without knowing much about this procedure. The question is, has male circumcision increased the sale of Viagra?

 

For some families the decision is easy. They believe circumcision should be performed for religious as well as for sound medical reasons. But if that's not the case, what should you do? A good start is a lesson on anatomy and its sexual implications.

 

First, the foreskin doesn't cover just a small surface of the penis. The skin removed by circumcision measures from three to five inches in length. That's about half of the total skin of the penis. Besides, inside the foreskin, there's a band of tissue that moves in and out like an accordion. This gliding motion triggers sexual reflexes and contributes to sexual pleasure.

 

So shouldn't sensible babies cry out to parents , "you had better think twice before removing such a significant portion of my anatomy. And have you ever considered how this will affect my sex life?" Some might even add in these litigating times, "do it and I'll sue you for a million."

 

Due to the recent research of Dr. John Taylor, male babies now have even greater grounds for being upset. Taylor is a retired pathologist in Winnipeg, Man. In 1996, he and his colleagues published a report describing anatomically 21 foreskins in the British Journal Of Urology.

 

In effect, Taylor claimed medical textbooks of anatomy have neglected the foreskin for hundreds of years. In Gray's Anatomy, the bible of anatomy, there's just one sentence about the foreskin. But Taylor and his colleagues found a "ridged band," 1.25 centimetres (half an inch) in width, that runs around the inside tip of the foreskin never before mentioned.

 

A detailed microscopic examination of the foreskin revealed it's not merely a piece of skin. Rather, it's loaded with blood vessels and nerves. Remove it and you also amputate a large part of the sexual portion of the penis. That in itself should warrant a class action suit by millions of males!

 

Erectile dysfunction (ER) is due to several causes. But I wonder how much Viagra is being sold today because of too much snipping of the foreskin?

So why is circumcision being done?

 

One lame argument claims it prevents cancer of the penis, an extremely rare problem. But you don't amputate breasts to prevent cancer of the breast! .....

Male circumcision has been called "rape" and/or "mutilation" before, and many, even amongst intactivists themselves, object, either because they themselves find it inappropriate, or because they're afraid others might, thus pushing people away from the message of intactivism.

But are "rape" and "mutilation" so different from male circumcision, that comparing them is inappropriate, if not insulting?

Two Infants Contract Herpes Following Circumcision,
With One Testing Positive For HIV.

Two infant boys contracted herpes with one testing positive for HIV-1 following ritual circumcisions, the New York City Department of Health said yesterday. [The herpes virus is HSV-1 and HIV is not usually numbered, so this may be a misprint.]

Denizens of the city's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, the boys were not identified. Both were circumcised in the Jewish ritual known as metzitzah b'peh, whereby the practitioner, or mohel, places his mouth around the baby's penis to suck the blood to "cleanse" the wound.

One of the two developed a fever and lesion on his scrotum a week after the ceremony, the health department said.

Although the city now requires parents to sign a written consent form acknowledging the health risks of the practice, none of the parents of the two boys signed the form, said Jay Varma, deputy commissioner for disease control at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

He said it was "too early to tell" if the babies would suffer long-term health consequences from the infection.

[If one has HIV how can he not suffer long-term health consequences?]

The city last year began requiring parents to sign the consent form to perform the ritual, following a string of health incidents since 2000 that included 13 cases of herpes with two resulting in brain damage and two others in death. Neonatal herpes can cause death or serious disability among infants.

Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University, told media there is no safe way to practice the ritual.

"These terrible infections are completely preventable," he said.

"They should not occur in the 21st century with our scientific knowledge."

Reproductive Organs.

Humans are sexual, meaning a male and a female are needed to reproduce. Each is equipped with specific organs capable of producing specific cells to procreate.

Together with a woman’s reproductive organs, sexual intercourse can lead to the reproduction of human life.

For men, the external reproductive organs include:

• Penis: This tubular muscular organ becomes filled with blood during arousal, thus making sexual intercourse possible.
• Scrotum: This pouch-like sac hangs below the penis and encases the testes, or testicles.
• Testicles: These two oval shaped organs produce sperm cells and testosterone.

While all men are born with all of their sexual organs, they don’t begin to function fully until puberty.

The common age of puberty is around 12.
During this time, hormone changes affect a boy’s gonads and create lasting changes that have typically been viewed through history as when a boy “becomes a man.”

This process affects many changes, such as growth, muscular build, hair growth on the genitals, face, and other parts of the body.

In terms of reproduction, puberty signals the time when a man has fully-functioning sexual organs and is capable of procreation. 

The male testes produce spermatozoa (more commonly referred to as sperm), which is released at sexual climax.
This is known as ejaculation. The sperm leaves the penis in a mixture of secretions designed to nourish and transport the cells into the female reproductive system for procreation.

There are up to 750 million sperm cells in each ejaculation, but it only takes a single sperm cell to fertilize a woman’s egg.

The testes also produce the hormone testosterone that is directly absorbed into the bloodstream. Along with producing sperm and maintaining sexual function, testosterone also creates common features that physically distinguish men from women, such as facial hair, deeper voice, more muscle mass, and broader shoulders.

As a man ages, sexual function typically diminishes.
Typical sexual dysfunction in men include:

• Impotence (erectile dysfunction)
• Sterility
• Low sperm count
• Lowered testosterone
• Testicular cancer
• Prostate cancer

PEDIATRICIANS SLAM AAP CIRCUMCISION POLICY.

EUROPE:

Thirty-eight top pediatricians slam AAP circumcision policy.

March 18, 2013.

The following article is due to appear in the next issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

It is signed by the heads or spokespeople for the paediatric associations of Austria, Britain, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands, and by senior paediatricians in Canada, the Czech Republic, France and Poland.

It comprehensively dismantles the AAP's 2012 circumcision policy statement.
Seen from the outside, cultural bias reflecting the normality of non-therapeutic male circumcision in the US seems obvious, and the report’s conclusions are different from those reached by doctors in other parts of the Western world, including Europe, Canada, and Australia.

In this commentary, a quite different view is presented by non-US-based doctors and representatives of general medical associations and societies for pediatrics, pediatric surgery and pediatric urology in Northern Europe.

Most physicians are sadly ignorant of the sexual and mechanical function of the human prepuce.

 

The prepuce is richly innervated, erogenous tissue, containing thousands of sensory neuroreceptors such as Meissner's corpuscles.

 

Many of the most sensitive regions of the penis are located along the inner prepuce and are needlessly amputated by circumcision.

 

The prepuce also acts as a linear bearing mechanism, providing a unique gliding motion during sexual intercourse.

 

 

Removing healthy, functional genital tissue from powerless infants is medically unethical and Canadian physicians should refuse to participate in this disgraceful practice.

 

 

Parental preferences and cultural traditions should never trump contemporary medical ethics and the fundamental human right to bodily integrity.

 

When will the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) recognize that the boy is the patient, not the parents?

At birth, the foreskin is normally fused to the underlying glans, protecting that delicate organ and, also, the urinary meatus.   As the child gets older, the foreskin very gradually loosens and becomes retractable.
