CARE FOR AN UNCIRCUMCISED NEWBORN.

How to Teach Parents
to
Care For an Uncircumcised Newborn.

Your Nursing Guide:

Assure new parents that they can easily care for their
son’s uncircumcised penis.

Difficulty Level: Easy        Time Required: 5 minutes.

Here's How:-

1... Teach parents that at birth, the foreskin is usually fused to the
head of the penis, and that it may take several years for the
foreskin (prepuce) to become loose enough to be retracted
        (pushed back toward the abdomen).

2... During this time, no special care is necessary. Washing the baby,
including the external genitals, with soap and water during his bath
        is adequate hygiene.

3... Teach parents not to use Q-tips under the foreskin or attempt to
forcibly retract it. Doing so can cause bleeding and injury.

4... Parents may notice small white “pearls” that have worked their way
to the head of the penis. This is normal skin shedding and can be gently
       washed away.

5... After the foreskin becomes retractable, generally between the
ages of 5 and the onset of puberty, the child can be taught to retract
       the foreskin
and wash beneath it as part of his normal hygiene.

6... As the American Academy of Pediatrics states...
“Leave it alone; is good advice!”
The American Academy of Pediatrics acknowledges that medical
benefits alone do not justify routine circumcision.

(Reassure parents that most parents are now choosing
not to circumcise
their sons.

Their son will not look “strange”, “weird” or “different”
if they
choose not to have him circumcised.)
