When I was pregnant with my first child, I just thought that circumcision was what you did, no big deal, and that every man was circumcised. 

 

Then one day I saw a picture of a baby being circumcised, and everything changed.  Just one tiny, grainy photo was enough to make me want to know more, and the more I knew, the worse it got. 

 

It turns out, circumcision really is a big deal.

DOES CIRCUMCISION PREVENT HIV?

NO, CIRCUMCISION DOES NOT PREVENT HIV.

 

HIV is transmitted through blood, semen, and vaginal secretions.

To prevent HIV from spreading, a barrier must block the transfer of these fluids between two people.

 

Circumcision has no effect on blocking fluids, and therefore does not prevent HIV.   Latex condoms have been proven as the safest and most effective barrier to protect against HIV for over 30 years now.
When used properly and consistently, they are highly effective at blocking the transmission of HIV.

 

Doctors and medical professionals unanimously agree that condoms are the safest barrier against fluids during sexual intercourse.

I encourage all sexually active adults to get tested every 6 months, know your status and know your partner’s status.
If you are uncertain about a status, I encourage you to consider mutual masturbation instead, as it is far less risky.
But if you do choose to engage in sexual activity, using a latex condom can dramatically reduce the risks of HIV.

 

Don’t be fooled by recent news reports that are claiming circumcision may reduce the risk of HIV transmission.
They are a dangerous distraction because they assume people have risky, unprotected sex.

 

Be smart and be safe. Wear a condom every time you have sexual intercourse to reduce the risks of transmitting and spreading HIV.

CIRCUMCISION: COMPLICATIONS.

Complications Following Male Circumcision.

Operation results may vary because a successful circumcision depends on the skill of the surgeon or medical practitioner, the medical reasons for circumcision, the method of circumcision, the amount of tissue removed and the way in which the wound heals.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has reported that while the exact incident of post-operative complications following a circumcision is unknown, it is thought to be between 2-10 per cent.
One of the reasons for this is that many problems following circumcision do not become apparent until the child grows into adulthood.

Bleeding and infection are the most common problems.
The child's urine tends to irritate the exposed glans and in rare cases can cause infection.
Post operative bleeding should be minimal.
Pain is common in any wound and circumcision is no exception.  Pain should, however, be a short term difficulty.

Research studies on circumcised men report that discomfort or pain during erections and at the scar site are not uncommon.
Other long term post operative of circumcision include disfigurement of the penis when too much skin is removed and erectile curvature from uneven skin loss. 
Scarring may cause numbness.

The foreskin is not “just some useless flap of skin.”
It is, rather, an important part of nature’s careful attention to sex and procreation.

The penis and foreskin (prepuce) begin in the womb as a penile bud.
Eight weeks after fertilization, the foreskin begins to grow over the head of the penis (glans), covering it completely by sixteen weeks.

At this stage, the foreskin and its glans share a layer of skin (balano-preputial-lamina, or BPL) that temporarily fuses the two structures together.

 

At birth, the foreskin is almost always still fused to the glans.
As the boy becomes older, they gradually separate of their own accord, a natural process that may not be complete until puberty or even into early adulthood.
The average age of separation allowing full foreskin retraction is ten years.

Some foreskins, however, never fully retract–and that, too, is normal.

CLERGYMAN: STRING OF CHILD SEX OFFENCES.

Upper Norwood clergyman 'could die behind bars'
after admitting string of child sex offences.

 

A clergyman from Upper Norwood was a paedophile who ran a pro-circumcision group, a court heard.

Vernon Quaintance, who was 71 on Wednesday, admitted a string of offences against five boys as young as 11 that he had met in the 1960s and 1970s.

Quaintance, who was a member of Catholic society the Order of Malta, accumulated an archive of vile images as recently as 2011, Southwark Crown Court heard.

He has served as a sacristan in the church in the Hospital of St. John and St. Elizabeth, north London, where the 'Order' conduct their masses.

Quaintance was a leader of the Gilgal Society [Brian Morris, of Australia, is also a member], a group claiming to promote male circumcision and “Its benefits in terms of health, sexual satisfaction and self-image”.

He dodged jail in 2012 after he was found guilty of possessing nine hours of child pornography on video tapes.

The baby is screaming as no anesthesia is used, which is standard practice.
The doctor is in no rush to complete the procedure as the infant writhes in pain.

One of the biggest perpetuators of circumsion is the myth that it is keeps boys cleaner or that "everyone's doing it.".
Due to years of misinformation, this is the widely-held American perspective.

However, circumcision is not a worldwide practice.
82% of men worldwide are intact.
Circumcision rates are declining as more and more people have access to the evidence that circumsion is not a medical procedure, but is plastic surgery on a penis.

 

The decision to circumcise must be made with the utmost consideration for immediate and future implications. 
As more parents have access to informed consent and evidence-based practice,
they are making the decision to forego cosmetic circumcision.
